English Abstract

A Focus on Regina's Children and Youth - a summary report was prepared by the Centre for Excellence for Child and Youth-Centred Prairie Communities, Regina Site in February 2003.  This report outlines the economic status common in the region.  The high incidence of poverty and the resulting lack of employment opportunities has numerous negative social implications.  Family breakdown is common and the resultant educational challenges like early school drop out is common.  Aboriginal communities experience these challenges at a much higher level than other communities.  Unfortunately, abuse, sexual exploitation of children and foster care is commonplace in these communities in Regina.  There is a need for increased community service and support programs,  but this is slow in becoming a reality.  Health and mental health issues arise in communities that suffer these setbacks compounding the problems that lead to alcohol and drug abuse.  It is difficult to sustain cultural strength  when elders in the community feel that there is a lack of a strong voice resulting in insecurity,  Racism is a common outcome.  The full report may be obtained by contacting
