Abstract English
This collection of articles, written by Journalism students at Ryerson University, focuses on the theme of representation in the media. The objective of this exercise was to encourage students to write about a group which is misrepresented in the media and to challenge these assumptions by looking deeper into the community which is being misrepresented. Topics include: Immigrants and integration; Aboriginal Peoples; Seniors; Muslim Canadians; Gays & Lesbians; Black Canadians; Health Care; Jamaican Canadians; and visa students.
Quotations
Is Toronto accurately reflected in its news media? Is the biggest story in town- our rich, multicultural diversity- covered fairly in the pages of our daily newspapers? Is it covered at al? These questions are seldom raised by editors and reporterd in their daily rush to cover history on the run. But they are increasingly being asked by ethnocultural, gay and religious groups who say too much of the coverage stereotypes, marginalizes and denigrates them. (p.2)
