Abstract English
Tania Das Gupta uses case studies drawn from the garment industry and the nursing profession in Ontario to present an overview of racism in paid workplaces in Canada. With reference to Marxist, feminist and anti-racist theoretical approaches, she touches upon issues of class, racism and gender, racism in management and methods of resisting racism in the workplace. The author concludes by emphasizing the importance of anti-racist education in overcoming the deeply entrenched biases and racism in the workplace and in society as a whole.
Quotations
It is crucial to note that the intrinsic characteristics of immigrants and people of colour are not responsible for the deplorable labour conditions in the garment industry. Their low political status, as defined by their immigration status, their 'racial visibility', their linguistic 'visibility', their gender and their lack of union protection make them perfect recruits to this sector.
