The Canadian Race Relations Foundation is pleased to commemorate the month of February as a time to both celebrate the contributions and achievements of Black Canadians as well as acknowledge Canada's racist past. It is our hope that with each passing February the education and awareness emphasized during this month will eventually become an integral part of our every day consciousness and common knowledge to all Canadians.

 

Although many Canadians have honoured February as Black History Month since 1926, National recognition followed December 14, 1995, when Jean Augustine, then Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, and the current Minister of State (Multiculturalism and Status of Women), requested, and received, the agreement of the House of Commons to "take note of the important contributions of black Canadians to the settlement , growth and development of Canada, the diversity of the black community in Canada and its importance to the history of this country, and recognize February ask Black History Month".
